DD13 just took the ACT last weekend, but we didn't go through JHU/CTY this time. (She had to take it for the early college entrance program we're considering.)

She said it went pretty well, though she was tired by the Science section and kind of whizzed through it, not taking the time to really study the charts and graphs, but just giving her best guess for the answers. I'm hoping her math scores went up a bit as I gave her a quickie trigonometry lesson the day before. Now we're just waiting.......;)

I plan on having GS9 take the Explore in January. Sometime over the next month we'll start looking at some example tests and look for some weaker spots that would be easiest to fill in. In the mean time, he's having a blast with Monsterous Maths and exploring Science, Social Studies, & History in more depth than his regular class is doing. His gifted pull-out class this semester is doing a study of the book 'Hatchet'. They're also writing a variety of essays.

I'm hoping she'll qualify this time because she could really benefit from taking one of their literature classes.

Okay, newbie question here. If one happens to live in a state that does not list centers for Explore, let's just say Ohio for instance, then how does one go about signing up for these tests? And like Dazey, I'm curious about the SCAT testing sites (and the test in general). I guess I can start googling these tests and try to learn about them, but can someone offer a quick tutorial, particularly for SCAT, SET, or Explore. (or point me to a previous post that runs through it?) I know the Explore test was mentioned briefly on another posting, so I have at least heard of it. I would also appreciate information on the summer institutes that have been mentioned. Inquiring minds would like to know more, please. smile

    Thanks!

    hello, all

I've signed up to do the SCAT through JHU/CTY but how do you apply/get info on the others?

We're in a part time public school program that - I don't think - gives much information in this area.

    ???

    thanks

    this is for DS8

It looks like *some* summer programs need scores to be less than 2 years old, but not all of them. I figure he doesn't need to test this year for summer programs since the scores from last year are good. If he decides he wants to do a summer program after 8th grade that requires a newer score, we can just do it in 8th.

His SAT did not qualify him for SET and based on his scores I think it would be a long shot even if we did try again. He is not a fast mover. Basically he does really well on the questions he answers, but he doesn't get through them all. I think that was stressful for him to know he could do it, but then run out of time. I think it's a reason to give him a break. He enjoyed it, but now that it has stopped being fun, I want to wait until he's into it before doing it again.

Regarding the SCAT - what if you don't have any standardized achievement testing yet? All I have are WISCIV scores. I may do WJIII testing in the FAll. Do any of those count for JHU-CTY?

Thanks OHG and Dottie! I will have to look into it. DS seems to like taking these tests. After the Explore was mentioned a few months ago, DS took a few of the sample tests online and was positively thrilled by the challenge. Ohio does not seem to have a whole lot of options though, sadly enough. And I have a hard time thinking of my eight year old taking the ACT. crazy

He did waltz out of the Jr. High/HS doors yesterday with a very tall, leggy blonde who looked to be about 18. He only came up to just above her belly button. For some reason, he chose to walk down the sidewalk with her instead of with me. cry I am so not ready for this!!

Thanks Dottie! I think I'll sign him up! So I can register now, get the packet, and then register to take the test any time as long as it's before Feb 15, and then test any time as long as it's before March 1? I found a test center 53min away which means I can do it in 45min lol....not too bad. How long does SCAT testing take?
