Hello all - I am looking for any guidance to help prepare me for an upcoming staffing meeting for DS5. We officially began homeschooling him for K last week and we are super excited about the road we are about to take. He already has an IEP and is eligible for his Speech and OT that is on his IEP if we drive him in for services. I also found out that there is the possibility that if gifted tested, that he could join in on the once a week pull out program for the younger grades.

I told the guidance counselor on the phone that we have done both the SBV and the Weschler preschool and that in both tests he scored extremely high on several subtests but when it came to subtests that dealt with fine motor coordination, he scored extremely low because of his dyspraxia and sensory disorder. Both psych's told us that he was obviously a 2e child and that his disorders are masking his giftedness and they suggested going with an achievement test instead of an IQ test for any further testing for right now.

When you go through gifted testing in a school system can you request a certain assessment form? Can I ask for an achievement test instead of an IQ test? Or are they able to look at his subtest scores as an acceptance to a gifted program? I would like to be prepared for the staffing and have no idea what I am able to request as far as testing. Thanks!

I think you have a compelling reason to have them consider using achievement testing for gifted i.d.

Could you get either of the psych's to write a letter to that extent?

I would see how much you can find out concerning:

Does your state require schools to i.d. gifted

Does your state require schools to offer gifted services

The big one is how the state defines gifted i.d. process. Where I live the state allows the districts to determine what they use for gifted i.d.

If possible I would get the rec from the psych and info beforehand. smile

Unless you wait until he's old enough to enroll in school, you will probably need to take him to a private psychologist. Sometimes you can get a good deal by going to the psychology department at your local university.

You can also ask your child's pediatrician for a referral. Sometimes part of the evaluation will be covered by your insurance.
