My older son was tested with the CogAT in 2nd grade. He did not meet the cut off for the gifted program using that test.

He did however meet the gifted program test scores for the NNAT and MAP reading and math. That qualifies him for all the gifted services at our school.

Between 3rd and 4th he had a full neuropsych eval. Strength areas are verbal and visual spatial. He was diagnosed with a learning disability in written expression. He also is diagnosed with an auditory processing disorder.

He’s about to take Cogat in 5th grade. This time he will have small group testing and extended time if needed.

Curious… what is it about the CogAT that might keep it from reflecting his abilities?

As a side note, my other son also didn’t meet the cut off on Cogat in 2nd, but he was identified as gifted with MAP math & reading. He was retested in a small group with CogAt and then met the score cut off.

This is a curiosity question, we have had all the testing we needed to qualify for programming and identify skill gaps that needed support. I’m just wondering what it is about CogAt? They both lean towards visual/spatial, maybe that’s why? Or maybe there’s an aural component?

You all seem to have a good sense of different tests, what they measure and interpretation of results. Guesses on why Cogat doesn’t catch his abilities?
