    Thank you everyone for all the ideas and examples! Your responses are so helpful. Like Emigee, I'm saving this because it addresses now and future conversations that need to happen. It is hard to adequately express my gratitude for this forum. Your knowledge and willingness to share means so much!

    I'm saving this as well. Perhaps I'll even print excerpts to have somewhere to remind me as I talk to my DD.

    Note on our related experience, if at all helpful. Due to DD11's low self esteem, we started having conversations asking her what made her great today. She started with nothing and so we'd point out "little" things - you turned in your homework today, you participated today. We tried to keep accomplishments in a growth mindset manner (greatness = trying, making an effort, doing the hard thing) rather than achievement.
