That's awesome Pemberley! I wish I had thought of something similar a few months ago when my DD turned 11!

She had told me (many months before her birthday) that she was hoping for a real-life owl with a real invitation to Hogwarts on her birthday - as in she believed it was all true and she'd get to _really_ go to wizard school. This is my kid who stopped believing in Santa and the tooth fairy ages ago (like around age 6) - but somehow was believing in a fictional place.

Of course I figured she'd grow out of it, and she didn't mention it again. Then her 11th birthday came - we had a nice party for her friends and family - no Harry Potter anything - she chose a different theme. But at the end of the day she was in tears - wouldn't tell me why, just kept saying she wished she could have her birthday over again. I'm sure now it was disappointment in not getting her owl letter - wish I'd taken it more seriously. :-(

Oh well - she's fine now with it (I think).

Awe Can2K I'm sorry... You may still be able to give her the ICE MAGIC type letter even if her birthday has past, though. That's the great thing about creating something like this - it can be anything you want it to be. Something along the lines of kids for the correspondence program are selected during the year that they turn 11 or the correspondence term starts in January so letters are sent at Christmas or New Year's Eve. You could even do it for an older or younger kid. It's whatever you want it to be.

I love supporting my DD's creativity and allowing her to remain a little girl as long as possible. She said last night that she had a "perfect birthday" and went to school today proudly wearing the "I got a Hogwarts Letter" shirt that my mother gave her. But it doesn't have to be ON your DD's birthday to still be special.

A few little details we came up with in case you or anyone wants to do this:

    - make your paper look like parchment by dipping in tea and placing (carefully) under the broiler

    - seal the envelope with wax and a stamp with an H

    - place Hogwarts seal on top of the letter

    - remember to put where your child sleeps on the envelope

    - a stuffed owl that comes to life at night when it has mail to deliver (or once she learns the necessary spells... ) gets around the live owl issue.

Uh, yes, probably a good idea to work around the life owl thing. Apparently they have had quite a few problems with an overload of real life snowy owls arriving at raptor rescue centers in the UK after the movies started coming out...it appears they do NOT make good pets!

Edited to add that taking can2ks kids birthday wish more seriously might not have helped at all - after all,you COULDNT arrange for her to be invited to Hogwarts for real, right? She had to finally give up her dream that it might be for real after all, and turning it into a game might have been counterproductive, even.
    Let her grieve.

    O. M. G. The screams, the shrieks, the squeals of delight! There truly are no words for how perfect this was.

I am so glad it worked out for you guys! I agree, it would have been a horrible letdown to be told she wasn't accepted because she was a Muggle. This is much better. This post made me so happy!

In case any other Harry Potter fans are going to find this thread I thought I would post about DD's totally over-the-top Harry Potter birthday party. Kids, parents and adult friends all got really into this so we ended up with a huge crowd and tons of fun.

    - We did Hogwarts letters as invitations, printed on paper that looked like parchment and rolled into scrolls. Since we were running low on owls DD hand delivered each to her friends.

    - we had signs for Track 9 3/4, Broom Parking Only, Welcome First Years, a message board with ads for used textbooks, old copies of the Quibbler, Harry's lost invisibility cloak, etc and each class we were holding

    - parents agreed to play various professors and teach the classes we planned. We had McGonagall, Sprout, Flitwick and Snape. Another parent dressed as Sirius Black and my mother ran Madame Malkin's Robes for All Occassions

    - as the kids arrived they put on the sorting hat and selected a cup with ice from a tray. The day before we had put food coloring in each cup so when we added a clear beverage (7 Up or birch beer) it turned the color of one of the houses

    - Transfiguration was a game of 'Pin the Tail on Dudley'; Charms included placing little capsules that turn into sponge animals in hot water and saying a spell to create the animal of your choice and casting a spell on Bertie Botts Every Flavour Beans to try to get the flavor of your choice (the faces as they bit into some of the nastier ones were priceless!); Divination was one of the parents looking in a crystal balls and making wacky predictions; Potions included making snow from a dollar store magic kit and of course combining baking soda and vinegar into a foaming magical mess; Defense Against the Dark Arts took place in a hallway with a strobe light and steaming dry ice. The kids were supposed to shoot silly string at a dementor but the cans emptied too quickly so only a handful got to try it...

    - food included pumpkin pasties, dragon wings, Mrs Weasley's meatballs and assorted dips, chips and candies named after creatures in the books. I also made pumpkin juice and used it for a toast in edible chocolate shot glasses. I also bought a frog mold and made chocolate frogs (complete with wizard treading cards) and used Ferrera Roche candies to make golden snitches with wings cut from doilies

    - a collection of stuffed owls on a shelf for the owlery, sticks of incense for wands and robes cut from inexpensive black felt added to the Hogwarts feel

This birthday was fun and totally over the top. Afterwards DD thanked me but said it was "a bit overwhelming" and thinks that next year she wants a small get together with just a few close girl friends. Yup... She's growing up!
