    Yeah Ontario not-math curriculum.

DD7 has just been diagnosed with dyslexia; we're working on the IEP with her school. In the meantime....

Looking over last week's corrected math homework (word problems whose solution is to add up a bunch of multi-digit numbers), each question has two notes from her teacher: "Need to explain what you did at each step", and "Need to give answer in a full sentence."

Hmmm... do ya think they get it?

Thanks for the welcome, and I agree with all your comments, both on Math Makes Sense and on this being a great group. I have enjoyed lurking and learning from others' wisdom. Fortunately, we generally have a good situation for our kids at this point, although it took a while to get here.

I'll take the blame for mangling Suzy's recipe, but I do agree with Cookie... who makes one cup of punch per guest? Just another thing that's wrong with those books.

CoastalMom, this is indeed "discovery math"... I want to rant some more, but I'll save that for another day when I have more time. However, to bolster your argument regarding Math Makes Sense, here are a few links that I found a month or so ago:

See pages 10-13 which refer specifically to these books:

Good luck, and give my regards to 299!

I ran Suzy's concoction past DH, who grumpily advised that he could not answer that question while cooking dinner. The poor guy actually thought he couldn't answer it for lack of attention, rather than lack of data!

Thanks for the links, LynneV, I'm going to use them in my quest to restore 299 to its/his/her rightful place in the number kingdom.

MichelleC, my dysgraphic DS got math homework that was writing out pages of numbers in their word forms. Cue another explanation of dysgraphia and a lot of deep sighs.

300.would be a tidy number here which is a bit better.

The recipe said the ingrediants were included not that they were the only ingrediants. Maybe the recipe also included 20 litres of beer. At a higher level I would recommend stating parameters for the missing info such as all ingrediants are given and all glasses are 250 mls but that is hard for young kids.

I hear you CoastalMom! This week it's writing out 40 to 60. Twice. And then once typed and e-mailed to the teacher. And then they do spelling tests on it all week....
