For those of you who have not seen my previous posts, I have been very confused about my DS10s private test results (GAI 159, FSIQ 138, probably 2e) and school test 91 percentile and not gifted.

So far it looks like he may have tourettes, or chronic tics with OCD, or some other variation (although based on a description of "tourettes plus" it -forgive the pun- ticks all the boxes).

I am considering appealing the GATE office, but I don't know if having an actual diagnosis would make a difference in getting a retest. Worse yet, I don't know if tourettes would actually have caused a problem. I see lots of people on this board who have kids who have ADHD, OCD and tourettes who still test gifted...

It might, depending on the child and circumstances. Anxiety/stress tends to increase tic'ing. Most individuals are able, by great mental effort, to suppress tics for short periods of time. High stakes performance situations (e.g., GATE testing) may increase anxiety in a setting (group testing) where tics are perceived as particularly detrimental to social status. For some, this can translate into diverting excessive mental energy to holding back tics, rather than, say, answering GATE testing items in a timely and accurate manner.

All the same considerations apply to OCD, especially any visible compulsions, and most of the other anxiety disorders. Stress increases the maladaptive symptoms of anxiety, and reduces effective use of coping strategies.

If you were to receive an accurate TS or anxiety disorder Dx, documentation, and access to a re-test with accommodations, you would probably want individual testing with a familiar test administrator, frequent breaks, and extended time.

Aeh -that's the mystery - he said he LOVED taking the test. He thought he got them all right. If he had anxiety, or something was wrong I think he would have told me he didn't enjoy it. I also didn't tell him it was for gate testing (in fact I didn't even tell him about it)

I am finding the second e exists, so it seems like the private test is correct, I just still don't understand how he would get such a different result on a a test that has the type of problems he loves (and is good at) solving.

This is still driving me crazy, can you tell wink

What was the school GATE test? And what were the discrepancies on the WISCIV? (I know you probably posted this before.)

ETA: Oh wait, I just checked your previous post. NNAT, right?

aeh -I am trying to figure out how this would fit into the picture... and whether treating the anxiety/ocd and/or inattention (which we are doing) would make a difference if we had him retested...

Aeh, I gather that you don't have anything else to add from what you said the last time (which I definitely appreciated and heard). Thanks anyway smile
