    Hi all,

I just brought DD6 home from the doctor I found at COVD.org.
Some of you may remember I took her to have her eyes checked at the beginning of last school year, because her K teacher wasn't sure she would send her to enrichment.
Several posters suggested I go see a behaviorial optometrist. I didn't, but have observed her over the last 9 months to see if I noticed any issues.
I did finally think she should be checked and made the appointment.
    Thanks to all, especially EandCmom!
The first eye doctor was NOT very thorough and it turns out she does need eyeglasses especially for close-up reading. It is a focusing and movement issue which should be corrected with glasses, Yay!
So DD6 is the proud new owner of an adorable pair of tiny pink glasses!
She will go back on another day to make sure there are no visual processing issues.
Second opinions are a good thing, I wish I hadn't waited as long.

DS also now has reading glasses. They don't typically check close vision for young children because they're not expected to read and are normally a bit farsighted. The eye doc said DS will probably outgrow the need for reading glasses in a couple of years.

Another update. We just got back from her appointment to assess the visual processing issue and there definately is an issue.

The doc will write a report with recommendations for the classroom and then we will talk concerning a therapy plan.

I'm glad I pursued this, I think that HG(+) kids are so good at compensating for weaknesses like this, sometimes they are not diagnosed until junior high and even later. I think the sooner it is addressed the better for the child.

Now lets hope that a therapy plan can help her. I think I read something like 80% of learning at school is through vision.

He was reading way above grade level and making great grades so his teachers kept telling me nothing was wrong and that it was just a maturity issue. I finally had enough and told his teacher this past year something was wrong and I wanted to know what to do. She gave me an OT check list and all of his problems feel under visual perception issues. I had him evaluated and he has a visual tracking/perception problem and he has been receiving therapy for it since last October. It has made a world of difference in his life and I only wish I had found out the problem sooner. Check out www.covd.org for more information if this sounds like something that might be going on with your DS.

I have told this story many times here and I am sure people are tired of hearing about it - LOL!!!! - so if you want more information send me a pm. Look under my stuff at the top and go to messages. Hope this helps!!! I know how frustrating these things can be.

I am glad you told this story several times here! Had you not, I would have had no idea that I should look into it, so thanks.

Thanks Dazey. And by the way, Scholastic is grossly over-ordered on the NXT. No telling when they will have it to fill orders, but DH's birthday is this week so I cancelled my order! It looks like we will have some expenses coming up with therapy anyhow, so not a good time. Perhaps we'll look back into it at Christmas-time.
