Hi Dottie,
While he may not be able to get awards as a 6th grader (don't know--you'll have to ask), he can still take SAT/ACT through jhu cty talent search or independently and qualify for summer programs. They have residential programs for 5th & 6th grade students throughout the country that have many exciting courses. My dilemma was--is DS mature enough for 3 week program? I decided Not. However, the summer institute through University of Denver (Rocky Mt Talent Search) offers an excellent alternative. One week session for qualifying kids grades 4-6, or 2-week session for kids grades 6-8. These are a good start to college campus stays and summer institute formats. You don't have to be from the Rocky Mt region to attend, just like my kids are not in jhu region but are attending.
Definitely stick to the grade your son is in (IMO).
