So come to find out that DS5 asks Dr S "when are you going to test [DS2]?"

And then in the ride back in the car, DS5 is "questioning" DS2 as if he's asking him questions from the SBV. Ha.

It's fine. I know that we're going to get confirmation that DS5 is gifted. It's just a matter of where on the spectrum he is. And I couldn't really hazard a guess. I don't think he's going to score exceptionally well on the SBV, but he'll probably do very well on the achievement test. The new thing is that the boy just started writing his mom notes...

While most days he does not take naps, he still goes up to his room in the afternoons between 1 and 3ish while DS2 naps. These days he'll maybe rest for 15 minutes and then he'll read to himself for the rest of the time. Since we put a small table in there for him to "work" on, he'll do math worksheets for fun. Lately he's started to write notes like "Mom at 3:30 please get me Love [NAME] xxoo". His handwriting is terrible, but he generally writes without misspelling (or minor misspellings). From watching him develop--going from "kid writing" style writing to correct spelling--seems to me like he just went through another development period. We've noticed this with both boys. They seem to go through real bursts of development and then level off for a while.

So a little bit off on a tangent. Did your early readers start writing early too? Handwriting really seems to be the bottleneck.

That's extremely common, JB. It's one of those asynchronous things. Be aware that schools often use handwriting as a reason to keep a kid from advancing. It pays to be prepared, I think.

DS7's handwriting isn't bad IF he's thinking about it and trying to write well (A *BIG* if!). But on birthday and thank you cards, his writing tends to be all over the place. We're working on a typing tutorial this summer so that he has a better shot at having a way to make his writing keep up with his brain. (He's pretty patient, but I, alas, am not.)

JBDad - I hope the wait is short! DS4 was an early reader, and he still holds crayons/pencils with a fist grip. He refuses to even try holding a pencil correctly! He has no interest in writing, but has started spelling out things related to his favorite video game. "Mom - i got the b-o-s-s creep!" I'm hoping his preschool teacher will have better luck with his pencil grip.

While you are waiting you can go back and read all the other posts about waiting wink

We too didn't get results right away, but the report was done within two weeks or even less. Not too bad.

BTW Dottie, can you calculate FSIQ from VIQ and PIQ for WPPSI-III? DS5 numbers just don't add up.

Dottie... You have tables for the WISC-IV???? I'm seriously envious. (DOK!!) I'm trying to calculate an new FSIQ for DS8 based on his extended score on the PRI. I've followed the technical reports, but have been unable to figure out the final step without table b7, or something similar. If I give you the numbers, can you look up the FSIQ for me?

I have any and all numbers that you could need... raw, scaled...

My DS4 who was able to read simple readers at 2.5 started writing early. He has pretty much always written his letters the exact same size and could write on a straight line on un-lined paper.

My DS8 who started reading about 3.5-4, started writing about the same time but no where as neatly as DS4 at the same age.

DD18months has had a perfect pencil grip since about 12-13months. I know the boys weren't scribbling that early. I never showed her how to hold a pencil either, I think she learned from watching us.

Don't quote me on that one though...I'm really not up-to-speed on the WPPSI like I am on the WISC-IV.

Thank you, Dottie. You sure are the expert around. I thought that FSIQ was based only on PIQ and VIQ, shows how little I know.

You are right looking at his report the coding is not part of either VIQ or PIQ. You are also right about coding (once I knew what to google for I found this)

For the computation of a FSIQ, either Coding or Symbol Search may be used.

His coding was only 13 so it would make sense that his FSIQ would be lower than what I would expect based on VIQ and PIQ. His Symbol Search was higher but I am quite sure she would have mentioned it in the report if she had substituted Symbol Search for Coding.

Thanks again. I hated the idea that there was something wrong with the report.

Gee Dottie, is that 138 DD8? Looks familiar grin

On writing after learning to read: DD6 still doesn't love to write and never did begin on her own after reading. She only writes at school because it is expected and doesn't write much or at all at home. She has somewhat of a fine motor issue and still doesn't appear to be holding the pencil correctly.

As to estimated IQ before the test.....Very cool that some have been able to do that. I underestimated both of my girls number by approximately 25 points.

I am a bad mommy frown
