DS7 is interested in fiction with HG+ protagonists (boys only!). Any suggestions? I'm actually having a hard time finding some.

Encyclopedia Brown? My daughter loved those books when she was 7. She still does, actually, at 9.

The Mysterious Benedict Society, although might be a little more appropriate for age 9. A Little Princess; Sara Crewe was certainly gifted and imaginative.

Ender's Game and Ender's Shadow--he's probably a bit young for those, I'd peg them more as 10+, but pretty much all the kids in that series were PG+, and written very well. And the book is much better than the movie. smile

Hmm, the topic wasn't specific to young kids, so I'll throw this our there for when someone with an older kid digs this thread up later: C. J. Cherryh's Cyteen series (summary: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cyteen), though I'd say it's more like 13+ interest level.

Well, I always liked the Danny Dunn books. And Val, I still love Encyclopedia Brown. smile

I've recommended Cyteen before, here, but was reminded that there is a lot of sex in it.

Possibly a little bit ahead of 7yo, but the Artemis Fowl books are terrific. And the Simon Bloom books, by Michael Reisman. Simon is 11, and I think Artemis is 12 when the series starts.

This is for a slightly older child but my 9 year old is going to read rocket boys: a memoir this summer (also published as October sky and a movie).

Not quite HG+, but HIVE is a great series.
