I logged on to say I can't believe I forgot The Penderwicks and I see that Sweetie beat me to it smile

Also The Egypt Game. That book got DD started on a long Ancient Egypt fascination...

My DD loved the Hobbit but interestingly could not get into LoR for about 18 months or so afterwards - she found the fellowship of the ring very slow at first.

Rick Riordan stuff she tore through like a dose of salts and was also into the Redwall series by Brian Jacques. I thought that vocabulary if the Redwall series was several steps above the usual kids/Tweens/'young adult' dross.

Also Geromino Stilton was still read then. They had a lot of history an other lore embedded into.

Another thing that my DD loved and continues to love is the Cricket magazine.

This is not a suggestion per se, but the website Goodreads has some great booklists that include many new books you may not know. I've gotten some great ideas for my kids there.

    My DS7 loved these books:

    1. Familiars series
    2. 39 Clues
    3. Spiderwick Chronicles
    4. Trumpet of the Swan
5, The William Joyce Guardian's series-- the hardback novels, not the Disney version

I don't know if the full series are in print again, but I LOVED Trixie Belden series (I do not handle scary at all - I remember finding the movie The Goonies too scary and I was not really a Nancy Drew fan) - I believe they started reprinting the early ones:

I just ran across this post and thought of this thread: http://www.generationikid.com/50-great-adventure-chapter-books-girls/

ETA: My daughter got Ronia: The Robber's Daughter for her 7th birthday, I think! That one was definitely a favorite that I had completely forgotten. For some reason, few people read anything other than Pippi from Astrid Lindgren.
