Oh, and I would probably talk about the reasons that a similar attack would not happen today if I thought that was something my child would worry about.
We need not fear an attack by Japan, but North Korea has nuclear weapons, and the 9/11 attacks did happen, and the bombing of the Boston Marathon did happen. I was within a mile of each attack. These attacks killed American civilians in the continental U.S., not personnel on a military base in Hawaii.
How much to tell children about such dangers is a difficult question.
