The link that Kriston provided is on my bookmarks bar and I play (or rather I try) every day.

Hello, my name is 'isa' and I am SETOHOLIC.

Pity I cannot do more than one set a day.
    Or is it a blessing?

Eeeeeexcellent! <rubbing hands together in an evil fashion>

But I think Isa must not know if she's only playing once per day.

I had never played before but the link Kriston posted in this thread really got me intrigued. Where was the original link? I just played all 4 from the New York Times and I am hooked.

    Cathy, you ROCK!

I still can't break a minute! But I never go as long as 2 minutes. So my average is quite good, but my personal best is still 1 minute, 5 seconds.

    Grrrrr!

frown I can't get the NY times 4-set site to open... boo hoo!
I'm hovering around 2 minutes in my one-a-day set games. I suppose I could pull out the actual set game and play more, but I'm all for moderation!

Is this the link you're using?

    http://www.nytimes.com/ref/crosswords/setpuzzle.html

It opened for me, so maybe you just had a glitch?

    Maybe, one day.

He is still 5 months old. Its scary enough that he unsnapped the safety strap on his diaper changing station last night when I was in the kitchen heating his bottle. I am sure it was "unintentional".

When I signed off last night, I realized last night that the SET game is really just asking you to find a projection of a sparse matrix.

Its trivially solved by ordering ALL the possible items in a matrix then placing the given items in that emptied matrix and then drawing the allowable lines between adjacent items in the resulting populated matrix. You can either translate the given items into a notation set and solve for the required projection or just project the matrix in your mind.

For more SET math, check this out: http://www.setgame.com/set/mathtricks.htm

My speed solving strategy relies on looking for certain easy-to-spot sets first and then systematically finding the rest. That means that I can be really fast if certain sets are present.

Austin, I think SET is a shape-sorter game for grown-ups smile

But the point of the game is not to figure out the math behind it. It's to find the sets.

Of course, if you like figuring out the math and that's how you make the game fun for yourself, then you don't have to read the link. That's fine. But I don't see how it's cheating to read about the math behind the game.

I guess I'd call it learning, not cheating! wink

Yes, I offered the link in the spirit of sharing some interesting math with others.

I have done some thinking about the math behind SET myself. I appreciate the elegance of the presentation in the link.

Ya'll convinced me to buy Set for dd9 for her birthday. She enjoys the game, but dd5 is addicted. She is very good and can beat even experienced adults. I didn't even realize she was a visual-spatial kid. She wants to play everyday so I showed her the online version.

Kriston, you can put another notch in your SET belt.

Cathy - SET was on the table for two meetings at the math circle my DS attends. They had lectures and exercises on the math behind it.

I like the online version. I find that w/ the cards, I'm convinced there is a set if only I look long enough rather than everyone agreeing to add more cards.
