Hi, thinking of setting up an email account for my elementary age dd, mainly to send links to her related to the subjects she is studying. I found this: http://www.zoobuh.com/which apparently has parental controls, and allows her to receive only from the list of email accts I add to her list. Thoughts? Suggestions? thanks!

Why not just bookmark the links for her?
I recall that my eldest had a "safe" email account when she was about 8 - but that was through France's postal service (some sort of special account for kids) and was set up by a teacher.

For the bookmarks, I don't use that computer usually, use my laptop mostly. I think I am going to go for it, if I don't like it I guess we can always cancel. It is about 50 cents a month with the discount code I got...so that is not bad.
I don't supervise the online time so much; we have mcafee so she knows to click only on the 'green' icons, and NOT go to youtube unless it is something we have allowed. She mostly just goes to disney, netflix, and a few other 'known' sites.
But I think I can point her to more safe fun sites this way, so I am hoping it will work out.

we all use *.me.com for email and iMessage ... the boys love SMS'ing dad, uncles and grandparents (for free). i check their accounts regularly.
i do wish other parents kept better tabs on their children's online activities as well!

I set up a google account for my son when he was a baby. I monitor it and allow fully supervised access - same for his blog - he can type, but I will review and post it for him. I am not on facebook and hence my child is not on it.

thanks, all. one of the other things I'd like to do is send pictures to her, but if they won't come through as attachments that would be annoying. Perhaps it is improved for that, as they did see to feature that in their demo. Will do some testing. Initially I thought google account also, with monitoring, but the influx of crap is so HUGE for my account at least, how do you deal with that?

I just setup gmail for both my kids. I have them tied to my account and have their passwords.

We also use gmail (well, we have a family domain name, which has the advantage that we could switch without needing to tell everyone new addresses, but gmail is what DS uses as a mail client). The one criticism I have of it is that you can't set up an automatic CC. So although I automatically get a copy of all DS's incoming mail, and although I know his password and can therefore check what he's sending whenever I like, I can't see in real time what he sends. It's more of an irritation than a problem, and the time is coming for us when his privacy would make it inappropriate anyway (aside: really not sure how to balance that against protecting a teen), but it's something to be aware of. There are probably other free providers that do offer automatic CC.
Email: my username, followed by 2, at google's mail
