From my son (6.5): Does anybody ever score in the 100th percentile? I said no because a 99 means that you scored higher than 99% of everyone else. "But what if you scored 99.99%?" And, "what if you and someone else both scored the same, 99?". Although I have a somewhat firm (like jello) grasp on percentiles, I can't think of a way to explain it clearly to him. The more I tried to explain it, the more muddled it became. (Should I mention that I aces Statistics in college? Ahh, but that was mmjhth years ago!) Maybe I should give him the school line: you can't learn that until statistics class grin

No big deal. Just one of those things that came up.

The way I learned it, you are included in the numbers. And since you can't score higher than yourself, you can't every break through to that elusive 100%. Think of trying to jump higher than your reflection in a mirror. Can't be done.

One subtest for a group cognitive test which my ds took at school indicated that he had attained the highest score possible but the percentile was recorded as simply 99th.

Ive never heard of a 100th percentile either and I didnt realize it was possible.

I had read somewhere, that on some tests, if 5 percent score perfectly, they may have randomly assigned scores of 95th - 99th percentile, while on another they would all be at the 99th percentile or all at the 95th percentile.

You know, as soon as I wrote the mirror analogy, I knew I'd regret it. wink

And, acs, it was such a good analogy! I think I'll use that.

Infinite series, converging sums, Oh my! Run, Toto, run! You're right, I'm not ready for that.

I've always found statisics interesting in that you can make the numbers mean anything you want. For example, that 59th could mean anything.

Maybe we could trade Dottie, like a time-share. We can channel you when we need the "just the numbers Ma'am" and you could take bits and pieces from us when you need them. I'm particularly good at being charming but disarmingly snotty when need be.

I am relentless, specially when I know I am right wink. At one point it is better to agree with me than to continue to disagree (too painful!) smirk just kidding!
