Hello. My child (6.5) was tested wisc-iv. PG with extended norms. The Verbal score was in the PG range and non-verbal on border of moderate/high. Anyone else? Wonder ways I might see this manifest. I realize this is a general question but am not clear on skills attached to verbal/non-verbal to reconcile result with his current behaviors.

Working memory HG. Processing in MG range. verbal was exceptional and pulled up entire score to the PG range.

My child is bright but not on a path to be a prodigy. The article is fascinating, thanks for sharing.

I assumed non-verbal would be linked to strong maths. So what exactly does non-verbal link to? What skills in real world would come easiest to a child with strength in non-verbal?

Tester said variance between verbal and non verbal was very big, but that can be normal for children in or close to PG range.

    Thoughts?

I tend to think of non-verbal as being along the engineering lines. The ability to conceptualize things, in 3D in their minds and manipulate them. These are the kid who can do puzzles and physical brain teasers very, very quickly.

Would you mind posting his subtest scores, or would you be able to tell us if there is variation in the subtest scores for non-verbal? The three subtests commonly give vary in the skills they assess, so (jmo) it's not that clear-cut to say an averaged non-verbal scores automatically means a child will have "x" set of strengths or "x" set of challenges - it usually makes better sense to first see, are the subtest scores roughly the same, or are there variations - and if there are variations, then look at each subtest and think through how that skill matches what you are seeing in real-life behaviors.

I'll also add that my ds took the WISC the first time at 6 and again at 10 - his VCI vs PRI were different by quite a bit on each - but which was higher flipped between 6 and 10 - so you also need to always look at each individual test as just one snapshot at one moment in time, and when you're making an education plan you need to also be sure to look at what you see (through your eyes) as your ds' strengths and interests and needs.

    Best wishes,
