He is doing better than I expected with writing some simple math problems. It may be that he is just tired of the repetitive writing practice at school and is okay with writing for a greater purpose. Today he did a couple of pages of things like 15 + 6, 17 - 8, and so on, and wrote the answers. Admittedly, numbers are shaky or sometimes backwards, but they are recognizable. What I like is that he will do a couple of pages with great enthusiasm, then say, "Okay, I'm done" and seem satisfied. I'm seeing that he would probably be a dream to homeschool because he's very cooperative and easy to work with.

I would love any more suggestions for DS. He LOVES the Sudoku that someone linked to. He is blazing through selected pages from some first- and second-grade math books I have (he doesn't know money or time, so that's all new). He seems to be doing much better with writing than I thought he would, as long as it's numbers. He's doing fine with second-grade reading comp. I haven't tried him on third-grade yet because he doesn't seem as interested in this.

He seems to really like sitting down and doing "work" and getting that feeling of accomplishment. It is improving his mood. He does this right after school.

Any kind of visual paper-pencil puzzles or maze type of things could be good. I had a maze page bookmarked (http://www.printactivities.com/Mazes.html) but he's past it.
