I'm interested in getting my 5 years old son tested, WPPSI in particular. Is there any parents here used or know someone who used psychologist in Singapore for the test with success?

From my understanding, it's important that person who perform the test to be familiar or have experience working with "gifted" child to get accurate result on the test. (My son has perfectionist trait. He need a person who know how to work around him to get him open up for some challenge. He also doesn't like doing anything thing that is timed whether it's a game or test.)

    Recommendation would be greatly appreciated?

    Katie

    Hi Geggychick -
Welcome. Generally, it isn't recommended to give the WPPSI to a gifted 5 year old. A WISC would better show that child's strengths. But a WISC can't be given until the child is 6. Is your son close to his 6th birthday? Was there a specific reason that you wanted the WPPSI? What about a SB-V?

    Lots of background here:

If you do find a recommendation, share it here:

If you want to say more about why you are interested in getting the testing, we might have useful general advice. Wish I had a name for you.

If you have to cold call a lot of offices, you can ask - 'In the last year, how many kids have you tested with an IQ between 130 and 140? Over 140? Over 150?' and assure the office that you just need a ballpark estimate. Don't let them get away with 'I deal with a lot of gifted kids...'

    Best Wishes,
    Grinity

Grinity's advice is great in my book. You might also want to investigate whether the DAS-II is offered in your area and accepted by gifted programs and services that have specific eligibility criteria, as that test can IIRC be administered to children as young as 2.5 years old.

Thank you very much for the advices. I'm very new to the area of giftedness. Though we've been noticing traits and skills that make our son different from others, we always thought it is how thing is. (You have bright kid in one end, you gotta except what come with it. We were just thankful then that he's not too bright to the point that the trade off won't allow him to live normally. )

Only recently we started him in school and the social and emotional issues became apparent. I looked up articles for help and came across the term "gifted." For the first time, all the puzzle pieces came together. When we left school, involuntarily, the principle suggested us to open up about getting him tested for giftedness. I don't find the need or use for it then because I'm not sure how I feel about putting label on him.

As I prepared homeschooling materials I noticed many gifted organizations or school required test results for participation. The name that came up all the time is WPPSI-III. With very little knowledge, I assumed it must be the best test for kid younger than 6 year old taken that it's one on one assessment as compare to SB-V. I just fixate on it and didn't explore any other options, being kinda stupid I shall say. Your words of advice put me where I should be and broaden the point of view. I can't thank you enough.

By the way, my son is turning 6 in April.
