Am I the only one with alarm bells going off? This sounds to me like code. Rough translation: "This teacher is a rigid thinker and hates to be told things by parents. If you're lucky she might notice on her own, and then you can give her a gentle nudge that might help her along, but only if you're vague enough about it. Good luck."

    I hope I'm wrong.

Could be. But there can be other reasons. Around here "all the children are above average" and principals are besieged by parents who think their kids are brilliant. If the principal made lots of promises about extra testing and special placements to all the parents before the school year started, it would be mayhem. They do need a little time to figure out this whole new batch of kids.

I don't think it's to be scared about; and I wouldn't assume the worst; but I think it's a situation to try out and see what happens, watchfully.

Just to follow-up since i'm the one with the quiet teacher pleaser. His preschool teacher actually did notice and was the first to say that he would have to be accelerated at some point in school. But then there were only 8 kids in preschool, compared with 24 in kindy. But the good news is that the principal is aware, and you are aware, and you will go to bat for your kid.

It does sound like MAP tests you're describing. I think they are really fabulous tests, but like someone else said, it all depends on how the school uses the results. And if you have an outlier, you may still be in a bit of a pickle because there may not be anyone with similar scores. Then you find your kiddo in a group of one...

If you still have the principal's ear now, or when school starts, you may want to ask more about what they do once they get the results, and what they do if your child's results are more like kids a grade or two ahead. Do they have any block scheduling, e.g., so your child can go to 1st for reading or 2nd for math when the other kids are doing their kindy reading and math? Just a thought.

    Hi
We just finished K and our DS was initially one of those the teacher was worried about because she saw someone who was barely paying attention, couldn't sit in his seat and had trouble writing. She didn't know much about him for at least 6 weeks because he rarely said anything. We chose the let her figure it our approach because we didn't want to come across as "those parents". But it was painful as the testing for reading was slow, and at first the assessment was so low in terms of where he actually was, not sure why, but they did 3 more assessments and i would say its pretty close - they kept going he was assesed at 4th grade level, sven so I had to gently ask that he be directed to appropriate books in the library and I would not say they were keeping up with his reading level in terms of available books. But what was available for the advanced readers was age appropriate chapter books. And that's ok because he enjoys them, even though he can do more, the humor is his right on for him.

What was funny, at one of the conferences the teacher was gushing about his progress, and werent we pleased, and we very gently pointed out the progress was in his comfort level, not his abilities, she was finally getting to see who we see. She was a wonderful teacher and ultimately became his biggest champion but it took a long time for her to see him. But she worked to find him too, once she started seeing little glimpses she went digging for it. She was wonderful in that regard. No school will be perfect - we can't get a skip - and they will likely never meet all his needs but because of her it's been pretty ok. I consider it backfill for all the things we didn't focus on while letting him go deep.

Another view from the peanut gallery wink
