    Hi -

I have been reading through the forums and could use some help interpreting my Kindergartener's Cogat scores. My district only provided this information to me:

Cogat test Form 7, Level 7
    Verbal - 124
    Quantitative - 145
    Nonverbal - 122
Composite - 139 (not sure if that is SAS or other)

According to the office, the max composite is 160. So, my question is, what does this mean? I have found lots of information on percentiles, etc, but I think they are mostly with form 6. How would you read these results? (I think he's gifted, but maybe not super-gifted.. if that even makes sense :)).

    Thank you!

Welcome ePink! Does your child qualify for your school's GT programming with his scores? What specifically are you trying to learn from these scores? Different districts will have different qualifying numbers, but 139 composite I would guess would be qualifying for most GT programs. I'm not especially familiar with CogAT, but I do know it's just a screener, and there is not really any way you can tell what level of GT your kiddo is with just the CogAT. Some very highly kids do not do as well on screener tests like CogAT, whereas some moderately GT kids can score quite high.

From the little I know, it looks like math would be your kiddo's strength, but the verbal and nonverbal are not weaknesses, those are good scores too. I remember someone posted a link here once where you could punch in the numbers and get sort of a score profile from Riverside publishing. http://www.riverpub.com/products/group/cogat6/input.jsp
ETA. Found the link. looks like this includes form 7.
ETA again... oh, looks like you'll need the profile numbers that go along with your scores. I'll search some more....

ETA - this guide is about Form 6, but if the stanines are similar, then I'd guess that your kiddo, based on composite, is a 9B profile Q+, which you can plug into the link above. But of course I'm just winging this, and hopefully a testing guru will post.

I guess one question that I have is that the Cogat 6 has a max score of 150, with a SD of 16. From what I read, the 7 has a max of 160, with a SD of 14. What I can't figure out is how to compare scores to get an idea of percentiles?

He did make it into the program - the cut off was 128 (2 SD). I am now trying to figure out how we are going to keep him challenged in math.

Have you asked the school? They might have some more info for you. Otherwise, you could email riverside and see if they have other documentation for you. Sorry!
