Is a 99 percentile score in NWEA MAP testing consistently from Kindergarten to 3rd grade mean gifted in math?

The actual RIT scores will allow us to tell you a lot more about what level of achievement your child is at. Do you have the scores, or just the percentiles?

The last one was 234 (3rd grade, winter test).

A math RIT of 234 indicates that your child is doing math at or near the average level for an 8th grader toward the end of the school year.

I think you can make a case that it would be highly unusual for a 3rd grade child who was not gifted to be achieving at this level.

thanks aculady for your response. I hope I can convince the school. My dd did not score well in cogat
hope the school will consider the fact that 99 percentile on every test means something as well

CoGAT often doesn't capture what highly gifted children are capable of. The MAP scores are strong evidence.

If the school denies gifted placement,(and even if your child IS placed in the gifted program), I would strongly advocate for your child to receive math instruction in a classroom where at least 30% of the students score as well as her current MAP score.

OK I will try doing that. MY DD's COGAT score have always been low. The reason for low scores are incomplete tests. The accuracy level is high but the speed is very slow. That led negative in Quantitative assessment and low score in the verbal and non-verbal.

MAP scores have always been high and she understands concepts quickly.

In our school I have not heard of placement in higher grades for just one subject. I'll have to find out about that.

I am in the same boat. 3rd grade is a very awkward time. My ds in 3rd grade has been place 2 grades ahead for 2 years in math. His 5th grade buddies are leaving to the middle school next year. He wants to go, at least for math. We are working with the district to see what they can do.

Not like we didn't see it coming.

    Seems that NWEA is solid.

How do you request for higher grade placement. Is it the scores or does one passes a district test?

It depends a lot on where you are. Sounds as though you're in the US, but different states have different systems. On the left of your screen you should see a "How gifted-friendly is your state" which may help. Usually, it seems to be a matter of advocacy and negotiation, not just a matter of test scores.
