DS (just 4, reading at gr3 level) said to me this morning - "I don't want to go to pre-school - its not fun." When pressed further he said "its not fun being with the other kids - I don't like playing with kids." He was in a montessori kindy (not attached to a school) last year with mostly 4-5 year olds, and his main friend was a highly+ gifted boy 1 year older than him. We are trying somewhere different this year (purely play based) as he had outgrown most of the activities last year, and his friends/teachers were all changing. Does it make it harder to cope with 5 days a week at school if you have had a year at home compared with 5 days a fortnight of preschool? I will pull him out if need be. And I thought all the agonising would start next year at school with acceleration etc on the cards...

We went through this with DD (just turned 4) and ended up pulling her out. She was so miserable. We are not sending her to pre-k for fear of it being the same thing.

As a child, I only went to a mother's day out program once a week as did most of the kids in my area. We all survived just fine going into a 5 day a week kindy program. I'm sure there will be an adjustment period, but I think you would have that regardless of how many days of preschool he is attending or if he even attends at all.

Now that DD is at home, we have realized that homeschool may be a very real option for us in the elementary years.
