I'm trying to put together a few pieces of work that DS8's science teacher could give him to replace things that are too basic for him. She has not been at all specific about what kind of format this needs to have, but from what DS says the kind of thing we're trying to replace is a "kind of mixed learning sheet and test" i.e. with some explanation, maybe some little things to do (that's tricky, his would have to be equipment-free) and some questions to answer. If need be, I could write my own questions to go with explanatory text, but of course it would be ideal to find such a thing ready made!

The topic list for the coming half term is:
    - how muscles work and how we feel after exercise
    - main bones in the skeleton and organs
    - exo and endo skeletons
    - teeth and eating, including:
-- the seven living processes (I assume this is the same list that I remember being taught as "characteristics of living things", i.e. growth, movement, reproduction, respiration, etc.)
    -- balanced diets
-- food and living requirements of a range of different animals

Ideally, I provide things that fit into these topics but at a deeper level than is being offered to the class. I can quite easily find intro college biology course material* on much of this, but I'm struggling to find anything - even just explanations, setting aside the wish to have embedded questions - in between that and the kind of thing the class will be using. Free would be good (cheap is essential right now), online would be good (light is essential).

    Anyone suggestions?

I don't think it fits in the agenda for this half term, exactly, but it looks cool anyway, so thanks!

Have not found anything for you, but here's a nice lengthy thread about teaching kids science from the well trained mind. I enjoyed reading it last night. One part somewhere said that science is harder to teach because it's newer. We've only been teaching science to children since the sixties, and Sputnik, according to the poster, unlike history and grammer.
