DS5 is promised differentiation/pull out/"data collection" to remove him from kindergarten math with the goal of finding an appropriate placement at some point. This was in response to his KTEA II scores (math concepts 160; math computation 138).
We have little more concrete than the above in writing from the school, but in person they told me that this would be done on ST Math that would start 7-10 days after our 9/29 meeting.
No such thing has happened. I'm politely and persistently prodding on that front.
Meanwhile, DS has finished Singapore 2A, screaming through it once his reading and writing ability caught up enough that he could do it without a parent sitting with him. He does this mostly while his sister is doing her homework with our sitter. Today DS was home sick and finished off 2A. He whipped through 20 pages in about 20 minutes. This is fun for him. He enjoys it and seeks it out when he's looking for a quiet activity.
I have no need for DS to progress in math linearly or at the height of his potential. I do want DS engaged and continue to learn this year. I do want DS to continue to love math and to continue his development in concepts.
As I see it, I've got three paths at this point.
*Singapore 2B. Looking at the 2B placement test, I don't think he needs to do 2B, or at least much of it to avoid gaps. If I were to get it, he'd probably do all of it without complaint, and will continue to treat the math book as a fun thing.
*Jump into 3A, and patch through concepts that he might not quite have down pat from 2B. (Does the expected reading level jump for level 3?)
*Because both the options above make the mismatch between DS and the school worse, I'm thinking that now is a decent time to switch gears and instead (or in addition to?) move towards something like logic. The logic problems DD started to bring home in 2nd are at too high a reading level for DS. They would be good for sitting with a parent, but not appropriate for "time to find something quiet to do while your sister does her work."
Any opinions on my three options, with our goals and mode of learning in mind? Any suggestions on something complimentary to traditional arithmetic/primary math? 4x4 Sudoku is trivial for him. He can do easier 9x9 Sudokus. I think his reading level is late first, early second grade level, though rising rapidly.
