I can hardly believe it, our youngest son age 6, just received notification that he was accepted into DYS!

I guess I am stunned b/c his school keeps saying he has a few gaps in knowledge they want to fill. Fine, do that, all for that, but why is he still sitting through the 1st grade class for math adding 2+2????? I'm overwhelmed, excited and a bit trepidatious about how his school will react.

Can anyone tell me if this has helped make a difference in a public, gifted education mandated school?

Just so happy for him in general though, I know it means good things no matter what!

Congrats!!! I hope you are able to get help...or at least have someone to talk at the very least when the schools won't listen!

Congrats. It's so great to feel that your DC is recognized for ability. From what I've seen here, This does not always get school to try and meet the child's needs. Other times it does amazing things. It can be worthwhile to look at other options just incase. DYS can help you deal with the school and that in itself is a big relief. It's nice to have someone who gets it.

Congrats! I think it helps your mind because you now think maybe you are not crazy. smile

But not to be a downer, it hasn't helped directly in my son's public gifted school. The school doesn't know what it means. It HAS helped by letting me talk to other DYS parents and attend the DYS seminars. I'm getting lots of good information to help my son's education there.

You will be happy you did it!

CONGRATS are definitely in order! I agree about it not being a big help if you are already in a gifted school (although in our old gifted private school they said it with capital letters, ie: "HE's a DAYYYYvidson SCHOOOOlar") but I think it can help in "regular" public school situations and having a family counselor to bounce things off of and have as back up / support is great! You will be happy you did it, I agree with Kate smile
