Grinity- you have perfectly described my son! He's 8, a DYS, slightly above average processing speed but not gifted but with high Verbal, Working Memory and Perceptual. He's usually the last one to raise his hand but the one with the follow up why question that leaves teachers gobsmacked that he put so many things together into a really deep question.

I just noticed last night that he's the one who never gets a Jeopardy question right if you just play "live" but if you pause, and let him think, he is more in the 60% accuracy range. Processing that question and finding the right info in that long-term memory takes him longer than you'd expect.

He's also the one who heard all year from a crappy teacher "For a smart kid, you sure are slow." *sigh*

I always forget what the other P stands for! Performance, Perceptual? Can anyone tell me a story to help it lodge in my head?

Thank you all so much. You've been a huge help with this. Apparently this issue isn't uncommon so that makes me feel a little bit better about the test results. So, for now I know that she is verbally gifted, but possibly with an average processing speed. We'll probably test again at a later date to compare the scores. Thank you again!

My son took the WPPSI- he explained it to me, and I realized that he didn't understand the directions on the part of the test when you pick which ones belong (or which ones don't belong). You were supposed to pick them in different rows but he picked them in the same row. His score on that part was pretty low.
I was pretty underwhelmed by the psychologist who did the test- her office was in a shopping mall and she spent zero time trying to make him feel comfortable or being friendly.
Six months later, we tried an educational psychologist in the Bay area (2 hours from our house) who was highly recommended. She did the RIAS test (I don't know why she picked that test)- he got a 144 on verbal, > 160 on non-verbal, and >160 on total IQ. He exceeded the ceiling on thosse. She said he got "all the way to the end" on the spatial part of the test, which is normed for adults up to age 94. He had also gotten a 99.1% on the Raven. She spent alot of time with him and developed a very good rapport. Frankly, these were scores that fit more with what we see in him day to day.
I mention this because I think the personality of the psychologist is also very important, esp. with little kids like this.
