Thanks St. Pauli Girl - that makes me feel better. It has been a kind of rough week. After the positive WISC scores and first meeting, I was feeling great. Then, I realized Andrew was going to have not one but two more tests. The first one (TOMAGS) got him really frustrated, probably because he has not been exposed to much math outside of his normal first grade curriculum. I was hoping (based on the meeting) that the WISC would substitute for the CogAT, but no such luck. CogAT is Monday. To to it off, My son was very clear with me that he was very tired of testing and kind of all done. Sigh. I think I have both myself and him all calmed down, but I am questioning a bit if I pushed too soon. I started all this because of his anger/frustration every day after school, so I think I made the right choice. I remember reading something to the effect that not choosing is in of itself a choice. Hopefully he can just persevere through the tests next week and the results dovetail with the WISC.

Try not to beat yourself up. I would have done exactly what you're doing. I really think earlier is better in these educational situations. I'm sorry your son is sick of testing. Probably doesn't help that it's the end of the year. I think the CogAT is more of a fun thinking test though, rather than a test of your knowledge. (Although I don't really know, so don't quote me on that!)
That's too bad that the school wouldn't accept the WISC. I remember being in a similar situation when we were transferring to DS7's current school. He would have qualified for the school with his outside testing, but they wanted to use the CogAT because that is what the school uses. I don't think it's a very long test, so hopefully it will be pain free. I also offered bribes when my DS was doing testing he didn't want to do. Video games, IIRC...

I am definitely doing the bribes. And I really think the school has been great. They have NEVER allowed a first grader to accelerate in subject before. My guess is that they need to justify the accommodation using their own tests. We just need to survive it and get on with summer. . Four more days. . In other news, my son had a great baseball game. He's a lucky little boy. I never had a lick of athletic ability. Well, not with sports involving balls.

I'm back again! This week, school gave DS CogAT, TOMAGS and the second grade end-of-year math test, all to access readiness for skip to third grade math. They are giving me the scores tomorrow morning. Any idea what the likely range will be for thes scores? I am anxious and trying to be prepared to say - oh, that is lower than I would have thought, or higher, or whatever. Ughh. I am probably overpreparing, but don't want to go in blind. Any help would be great.

Dottie, thank you so much. What will be will be, but it is so helpful to know what to expect.

We finally have our result! DS will be accelerated to third grade math!! FWIW, TOMAGS came back high. CogAT was strange. He only missed 1-2 questions in each section, but when they age normed the test, he fell below their program cut-off (their program is designed to start looking at kids in third grade and they gave him the first grade CogAT). They essentially made the decision to "throw away" the result in favor of our private WISC results. This gave me a lot a confidence in the school. Also, it reinforces the importance of private, individually administered IQ testing in cases like DS's.
Thank you all for your kind input and support. It was really nice to have a place to discuss these things that otherwise go almost unspoken.

Wow midwestmom! That's awesome! I have been following because I too, have meeting with the principal tomorrow and am asking that my 9-year-old 3rd grader take 5th grade math next year. Her WJ-III came back with an overall 99.6%. But unfortunaltey, that is the only test I have to offer. I have past report cards and a little bit of past work showing that she was doing stuff in first grade that they are learning in third grade.
So, I'm learning from you! I sure better figure out how to get that private IQ...I was hoping the school would offer to give one after the meeting, but maybe a private one is better.
So happy for your results! Good job and good luck!

Hello all! I would very much like this board's thoughts. DS was accelerated to 3rd grade math this yr from his regular 2nd grade class. He was VERY reluctant to go, but he seems accepting now. He might even be enjoying it. But ... still not quite challenging. I want to think about next year. I think that they track the kids in third grade into two math tracks, but not 100% sure. They use Everyday Math. When should I start talking to the GT coordinator and principle? He also just feel in love with reading, but nothing earth-shattering - captain underpants, Garfield, etc. I think I would rather he be double-accelerated in math to 5th (there is very limited precedent for this, but for older kids) that whole skipped in everything to 4th (which would not be an additional math acceleration). Or should I just let it lie and let the school do their thing? They were exceptionally accommodating in the spring and I don't want to press my luck.
