Getting closer and closer to the NYC G&T debacle. My boy is 3 years and 4 months old and I'm nervous he will fall through the cracks.
They gave him a basic intelligence test last year and he failed it badly due to non-cooperation with the teacher. I told the teacher that I wasn't worried too much because he has known his phonics since 16 months old and is reading books now at about 2.5 years old. etc. "Sight read" she said "I did notice he does sight read stuff." I started to explain that he does read phonically in combination with sight reads hundreds of words but quickly cut myself off thinking I'm tired of the doubtful looks and I'm not going to put on a pony show with my kid to prove it just to save face.
Looking back now though I'm worried it might happen again on these tests. From what I've seen the questions. He could read the questions and at the same time I could see
him just not wanting to participate.
Hi lex
It might not be as bad as you think, taking a test at 2.5 and 4.5 is a massive difference in maturity, patience and interest. People are concerned aout the validity ofmtesting 5 year olds, which makes me think 2.5 year olds are even iffier. My DS5 took the test and reads on the 3rd to 6th grade level by preference and probably higher in some
areas, but it doesn't matter, they didnt show the questions to the kids for the K test, it's read aloud and they have a row of pictures to look at and choose from. My DS kept trying to read the practice version but it's not an issues for the actual.the rapport with the tester is an issue, so is the night sleep they got, did they want to go somewhere else, was the chair uncomfortable, they are 4 or 5 and it's tough. There isn't that much you can do about that part. My kid bombed the SB5 for hunter because he developed a double ear infection with fever, someday I will stop kicking myself for not canceling even thou he was not that sick in the morning. The one thing I did do which was useful was to teach him to look at all the answers before picking, because obviously sometimes the first answer is close but not the best. And we did have a conversation about participating - but again that's age, we didn't say anything when he did the wpssi at 4.5. As it gets closer you will get a better feel, but it is quite stressful especially ifyou do public and private because that is erb, sb5 and olsat, plus playdates, its a lot for little kids. And if can feel like the end of the world, but it's not. Depending on where you arezoned they are excellent schools, and excellent g&t's, it really depends on how much more than MG you kid ends up being IMO.
