It always amuses me - I can spell anything, DS11 can't spell for tofie

. Until Dr Johnson compiled an English language dictionary (1750s), it really wasn't an issue apart from the ability to be understood in writing - like spelling "thru" or "through". In the UK we have to jump "thru" the "through" hoop to get the mark.
Like the old chestnut :
What does "GHOTI" spell?
Answer: Fish
"GH" as in rough
"O" as in women
and "TI" as in station

Awful language for spelling - God help our little ones (especially those in the UK)
