I am not sure that any of us are ever good at stepping into the background when things go bad. I think you realize that when they're learning to ride a bike there's not much sense in doing the peddling for them, but you're just going to provide a hand on the seat to help them before you let go. It's easier than you think, because if you hold on too far down the road you get out of breath.
