Rutgers sees rise in gifted high school students taking summer courses
By TOM BALDWIN • STAFF WRITER • May 30, 2010
The state university heads
toward the summer sessions this year with an
increase in students in both the gifted high school
and regular programs.

Why this is happening is not quite clear, though
school officials welcome the upticks and have some
theories as to the causes.

We put a little brochure together and sent it to high
school guidance counselors, said Elizabeth Hough,
director of the summer and special projects on the
New Brunswick campuses.

As far as high-schoolers taking college-level
courses, the growth, Hough said, has been charted
this way: 38 students in 2005, 49 students in 2006,
38 again in 2007, then 42 in 2008, 74 in 2009,
with more than 70 accepted so far this year.

Hough said, We actually started accepting younger
students four years ago. One was a 10-year-old,
Hough recalled, saying, He was tested as
profoundly gifted.

She said parents of the gifted grow frustrated as
their children zip through the grades. So Hough
said a group has formed as parents realize their
children require broader challenges. It is called
HEROES, for higher-education, resources and
opportunities for exceptional scholars.
