Don't forget that GT kids are human too, and all humans will want to learn more and/or be more knowledgeable about subjects they like.
DS5 is advanced in math. He's fascinated with patterns, can add and subtract, and can do simple multiplication. But his reading, spelling, comprehension, vocabulary skills are far more advanced than his math skills. If you put a math problem and a list of new words to read in front of him, and ask him to choose which to do, he's going to pick the list of words because it's far more exciting/fun for him. Because he likes to read, he has advanced more quickly than he has in math.
