Even if you test well in 1st grade, the spots available are limited.

But there are options for middle school and kids are tested then. Hunter High School actually starts in 7th grade. Kids take the test and can enter then, but only at 7th grade.

And Styvescant High School is grade 9. Any child in 8th grade can take the test for that high school.
