I obviously need a holiday (knew this anyway) but the thing that strikes me most forcefully in that article is the quote about what the authors "cannot (and do not) tell us". It should be "do not (and cannot) tell us", surely!
Your version has it clarifying that it isn't available to be shared and could be a tiny bit writer patting themselves on the back (more commmonly with indeed, as in "and indeed cannot".)
The writer's version could imply that other researchers will often share speculation as fact and at least in this instance these researchers have not gone that way.
Depends on what the communication intent was; I prefer the sly wink of the version as written.
