DS and DD took the SCAT in 2nd grade but they actually use the same test for 2nd and 3rd grade except that 2nd graders are normed against 4th graders while 3rd graders are normed against 5th graders.
There is a mix of questions and I believe that it is designed so that kids who are conceptually strong in math can figure out the answer even if they haven't covered the material. For example, if you understand that multiplication is repeated addition and that division is repeated subtraction and are fluent with numbers, then you have a good shot at solving ostensibly "multiplication" and "division" problems.
