I’m the volunteer school support associate for a local learning group of The Stanford University Education Program for Gifted Youth Open Enrollment Program (EPGY). Our Mahoning Valley Learning Group members are mostly in northeast Ohio and Western Pennsylvania. However, as long as you don’t expect me to drive over to your house to help you set up the program, I don’t mind members from other geographic areas.
EPGY Open Enrollment offers online courses in mathematics to students in kindergarten through eighth grade (Beginning Algebra). Courses in language arts are offered to students in grades 2-6. If you sign up for the Stanford EPGY Open Enrollment program, your child has access to both the language arts and math programs and can complete coursework in both areas or one or the other, whichever you prefer.
This is an open enrollment program, so any interested student in kindergarten through eighth grade can enroll. Students do not have to have been tested for giftedness, apply for admission, or take the EPGY Mathematical Aptitude Test. In this program parents support instruction rather than EPGY instructors and tutors, and students do not receive an official transcript from Stanford to use the coursework a substitute for school curriculum.
Students can take courses any time. Courses are completely online. Students complete course work when they want at times that are most convenient to them. Students work at their own pace. They can jump ahead if lessons seem too easy or back up if coursework is too challenging. Reporting tools assist parents in monitoring the progress of their children so they can identify areas of challenge and assist their children accordingly. A range of self-help guides and tutorials are available on the Open Enrollment website.
There is a one-time activation fee of $25. The tuition is $135 for a 10-month course and $95 for a 5-month course. Enrolled students can add another 10-month or 5-month period at any time before the courses expire by using the re-enrollment tool located on the student page. Once the courses expire, the $25 activation fee will have to be paid again to re-enroll.
