I just had to share, because we're so often full of bad news and frustrations around here regarding our little gifties' schooling.
Yesterday, I visited DD7's 2nd grade (public school) classroom for open school day. When the class moved to the art room, DD's teacher came to find me to speak with me privately. Evidently, during a lock-down drill the other day, DD regaled her class with a retelling of The Odyssey, her favorite story. Her teacher was mostly at a loss for words, but kept repeating herself with phrases like "I knew she was here, but I never realized she was here" (gesturing with hands held up to her eye level, and then again above her head.) She even talked to DD's first grade teacher about how blown away she was, which is even cooler, since first grade teacher was the one who refused to provide differentiation because of DD's "emotional immaturity."
It was just an awesome moment. For the first time, I felt like one of her teachers really saw her for who she is.
