I'd also add that once a child is in 2nd grade, they not only need to qualify to enter the JH CTY Talent Search, they also have to test above a certain level on the John Hopkins SCAT test to qualify to take courses through CTY, and that's a test that only kids who qualify for the talent search to begin with take. I know a few kids who've qualified for the CTY Talent Search but didn't score highly enough to take classes.
Re admission to tough private schools - requirements for admission are going to depend on the school.
Anyway, I agree with the others - I wouldn't spend the $ to have my young child take a CTY course... and I'm a fan of CTY! My middle schooler is taking courses through JH and loves them... but he's a lot older and has some very definite goals of *his own*, so it's his choice. Way back when he was four, he loved to create, play, be able to just think about whatever entered his mind, ask us (parents) lots of questions. I can't tell you how many times I wish he was as "free" to just explore now as he was back then! So I'd enjoy it while you can - offer your child lots of real world experiences, lots of reading to him, lots of time to just be.
Best wishes,
