I'll add one more note: She was referred for a dyslexia screen in third grade by teacher d/t poor spelling. The screen didn't pick anything up. But due to punctuation and spelling and reading issues, I'm afraid it's there, but she was bright enough to compensate for a third grade screen, but as the material has gotten more difficult and reading dependent (she is in private college prep school), she is slowly circling the drain. Anyone else had a screen not pick it up to later have it dx?


It's possible, depending on what tests they give. Tests that are very comprehensive and look at a combination of spelling...grammar...vocabulary...reading comprehension...reading fluency...writing fluency...etc. when making a determination are more likely to be pushed to the "no diagnosis to be made" side by relative strengths that gifted kids have (so the "points" that they get by using a higher-level vocab word in their writing outweigh the "negative" of not being able to spell that word correctly...or the fact that some of my dysgraphic students had no problem with things like verb tense and were well-above-grade-level on non-spelling-related writing conventions balanced out their spelling issues so no diagnosis was made). Tests that allow those skills to be assessed in isolation are more likely to accurately diagnose gifted kids (so even such simple things as AIMSweb screenings).
