I first realized that some of my, ummmm...issues...were likely caused by ADD when talking to a (HG) friend, and after reading Driven to Distraction and other books on ADHD it became clear. My primary care dr. asked where I went to school and what my college GPA was and said I certainly could *not* have ADD. I disagreed and he sent me to a psych. before agreeing to a trial of medication. Basically I just talked to her for about an hour and she agreed that it was indicated. My brother (and father) have many similar issues and my brother has recently started meds as well and it has made a difference for him. I don't know if his PCP prescribed or not, but I don't think he had any IQ testing (I suspect we are all in the 130-140 range).

I would love to get a full psych-ed assessment but my insurance didn't cover it--I think it could be enlightening. You might check out the book Buzz A year of paying attention. She discusses the ways ADHD is diagnosed in adults.

Good luck!
