Grinity- you have perfectly described my son! He's 8, a DYS, slightly above average processing speed but not gifted but with high Verbal, Working Memory and Perceptual. He's usually the last one to raise his hand but the one with the follow up why question that leaves teachers gobsmacked that he put so many things together into a really deep question.
I just noticed last night that he's the one who never gets a Jeopardy question right if you just play "live" but if you pause, and let him think, he is more in the 60% accuracy range. Processing that question and finding the right info in that long-term memory takes him longer than you'd expect.
He's also the one who heard all year from a crappy teacher "For a smart kid, you sure are slow." *sigh*
