My DS, now 7 was a self taught math learner for the first 5 years. He seemed to eat numbers. Consequently he was all over the map in what he knew and didn't. When I started homeschooling him, we spent a far amount of time backpedaling and filling in things he had missed.

It wasn't a problem since he filled the gaps quickly, but it is something to consider.
