I called my dd4's school yesterday (private K) to ask about their attendance policy for kindergarten as I was hoping to keep her home on this thursday's holiday (a day off for the public school). I don't want her to get through the kindergarten year and then be told she missed too many days!

Of course they have no actual answer for me... but then I asked what sort of statement do they general give to parents at the end of the year to 'prove' a child has completed K and she said in addition to progress reports from the school, there would be SOL results, etc., and I stopped her to make sure I'd heard right.

I didn't think most K kids were 'definitely' reading even at the end of the year, so I wasn't sure what they could be testing for. If anyone has heard of this kind of testing for kindergarten, please let me know ,especially in Virginia.
I remember ds being given phonological awareness screenings and in first a Stanford Diagnostic Math test but I think they started in 1st.
I did a quick check of the website and so far have not found much, I am tempted to call one of the regular public schools.

To my knowledge, SOLs don't start in VA until 3rd grade, my daughter attends a public here, and I know hers didn't. I've also never seen anything listed under the 3rd grade level on the SOL practice sites we use. They do PALS testing, but that's more of a reading test than anything else. Hope this helps!

Ok, thanks! that's what I thought too, but sometimes the info I get from the school is just wacky.

The SOLs are the standards for each grade, as well as the tests. For most activities they can tell you what SOL it covers.

We weren't very clear, I don't think, Tallulah..she was asking in particular about SOL testing in the spring. There are SOLs for each grade, I'm sure, but they don't do formal testing until 3rd grade, in our district anyway. The SOL tests are multiple choice, standardized deals.

But if the woman at the school was talking about SOLs for kindergarten, she probably meant the curriculum, not the tests.
