I loaned my copy to the math teacher at my son's school (in the hope that she might actually read it) but I have a question if someone has the book handy. I am trying to figure out the name of one specific test. There is a chart where the author outlines various achievement and aptitude tests. She references one test that she says is excellent for evaluating exactly where a child is in terms of achievement and grade level. Can anyone look up the name of that test for me?

One of the example reports has the Raven's Standard Progressive Matrices (RPM). It says it's an excellent measure of abstract reasoning. Was that what you were looking for? If not, let me know and I can look some more.

I think it either the SDTM or the CTP-IV, I'll do a little research to figure it out - we already did SCAT, we just need more specific information about where he has gaps. Someone suggested having him tested at a Kumon type center - not so sure about that. Quite frankly, if they are making us jump hoops to get him help, I want to at least know where I need to work with him (I am afraid they will do the "but he only scored 89% on the 4th grade level so he clearly can't go on to 5th grade math"). I guess that is potentially a form of hot-housing, which is not what we are about , but I would hate to see him not get help simply because we have never talked about decimals much.

Are you referring to the Explore test?

I've read the book and think it is very good. Chapter 5, "Talent Searces for Elementary Students", discusses the math acceleration options that are appropriate for students with certain scores on the Explore test, which is used by the CMITES and NUMATS talent searches. Much of the book is available online at http://books.google.com .

Sort of OT here: I was reading the link above in Developing Math Talent googlebook on the Explore test. Table 5.5 shows the Explore scores by grade level and range A,B,C. They then give general accommodations that may be needed for range A,B,C. I noticed that while chart 5.2 is the same as the one printed in my C-Mites Explore Score Interpretation Guide, Table 5.5 matching Explore scores w/ range A,B,C are slightly different but they both reference the same book and edition (Handbook of Gifted Education). DMT puts him in range C for math but C-Mites guide puts him in range B. I tend to agree w/ the C-mites guide.
