I'm glad your DD is enjoying the tutoring. The comment of picking up things so quickly gives me some inklings that maybe she just needed a few gaps filled in and will do fine with her accelerated placement.

MAP testing is one type of achievement test, and it can be a pretty decent one, as it lets the kids move on to above-level materials until they miss multiple questions of the same type (I believe). I think kids take the MAP test at a computer. In contrast, another common achievement test is the Woodcock-Johnson, which is administered by a psychologist. There are obviously different dynamics with a self-administered versus administration by professional who is making observations. We had the best luck getting on the same page with our school staff when they used the achievement tests that they were familiar with - MAP and WJ. That showed them more than the IQ test did, since they could see how our DS did compared with other kids in the school.

ETA - I am a classic underachiever who wishes I could have/would have been grade-skipped as a child, so I feel that my personal biases might come through in my comments and needed to come clean.

With the further info you gave, I might give it a little longer and see how she does with the tutoring to see if she can go ahead and move forward with her class. We, too, have an underachieving extravert and are trying to find the balance btwn pushing her too hard and letting her continue to underachieve. It's a tough line to walk!

Thanks for all the input. I agree that with her IQ testing we'd expect less issues. The more I talk with my husband the more he makes me realize that it may not be as bad as I think. If it were, we would expect the school would have stepped in and done something or told us when we asked if she needs held back. Still need to talk with teacher again and do some Acheivement testing.

She does have some vision issues and that contributes to her reading. She "forgets" to wear her glasses most of the time (something we are working on.) We are using the glasses in hopes of avoiding vision therapy. Her eyes have improved along with her reading.

Part of dd'stough transition this year has been learning to do "school." She was never been in school before (went to K for a few weeks last year and we pulled her to homeschool.) We didn't get to much "homeschool" because of some personal family issues so it really was mostly a wasted year. Essentially, she was starting from square one this year.

There are still many pieces that need put into place so that we can get a complete picture for next year. Thanks!
