DD has been a little on the dramatic side here lately and I don't know how much is her overreacting and how much is truth, but she has been upset about the kids at school and making statements that they don't like her. When we ask her why she thinks this, her response is usually on the topic of the kids picking up on her being different which leads to them not wanting to play with her. I suspect she has received that comment from a few of the kids but I don't think it is as dismal as she makes it. She has also been drawing a lot of kid pictures and when she adds a sad face she informs me that it is her and it is because she is lonely.

Knowing my child, I suspect that she does stand out with her age-mates. Her vocabulary and articulation is through the roof and her imagination is over the top. Plus she already knows all the material except in English and has amazing fine motor skills. She also made comments about some of the kids chewing on their books and I can only imagine that was met with DD stepping in and informing them that they are not babies and not to chew on them. Something she has understood since before she was a year old, so she doesn't comprehend how her classmates don't understand that. Clearly, her friends are picking up on her uniqueness and it is affecting her. So my question is what to do about this? Do I ignore her concerns and assure her that her friends will come around or should I start establishing why she is different? Up to this point ... I really have stayed clear of the topic, because it isn't something I want to focus on ... she is herself, period.

I would suggest you call her teacher and see if she is aware of this happening at the playground. Has this been occurring in the classroom. At our school there have been sitution were the school psychologist has intervened in a very informal way. They would get a group of kids together for a freinds lunch and try to make the situation better. I have never talked to a parent about this but it sounds so nice.

I think kids need to know it's OK to be different. Everyone is different in some ways. She needs to care more about being true to herself than what others think. This is a process and may take time.
