Hi! I must not be putting in the right search words. Does anyone know if there is a law or regulation in Texas that will allow students attend part-time home school and part-time public school?

I did find House Bill 531 for 1999 that proposed home school students may attend public school part-time. But as of 1999, it was pending. Does anyone know or can point me to the right site?

    Many thanks!

Wish I did. Check your state site under homeschooling. If your looking at it for a potential grade skip I have an idea I'm going to try.

I'm thinking of doing something unusual for my DS in his 3rd grade year to help with a skip. The skipping rules in my district are horrible and wouldn't work for him. So I'm planning on getting around it.

My district won't do partial homeschooling, but I did find where they allow private homeschooling with 180 days of school . So I'm going to do homeschooling during the summer and breaks for "4th grade" while he's taking 3rd grade at the school. That way I won't have to fight with them. I can prove he's done 4th grade and he can then move onto 5th. I'm all about finding the loopholes in their wacky systems! Maybe Texas has a homeschooling rule that you could use for that.

If it's not for skipping, they may have something called homebound that might work.

Good luck and keep us posted smile

    Hi Momma Bear,

Thank you for your thoughtful points.

I do admire your effort and cleverness!!! grin

I ended up calling the Texas Education Agency and the local school district. Unfortunately, both gave the answer as "most likely not" because "a student must attend >90% for the school to receive funding from the state." I have not completely given up yet and am searching the web. But, we are looking for some other options.

As for grade skipping, in Texas, I do believe that students are entitled to "credit by examination." Just need to check for the dates offered.

We thought about grade skipping, but my kids have uneven development. They have good brains for certain areas (math and reading and board games), but areas like writing are on par with their peers. Then, there is always the social and emotional aspects.....

But, many thanks for the input! Good luck with your son's grade skipping! The process of finding a fitting education really should not be so hard.... cry

The funding issue. I didn't think of that. And funny you mention the credit by examination. I stumbled across that when I was looking for summer camp options. That's awesome! I emailed my state board to see if we have something similar.
