My state is also listed as a red state - but the local school district do have a gifted program, and there is a gifted school in my city. My 6 year old first grader attends a public elementary school, which is a Title 1 school (low income and poor performing) and as MSFriz said above, he definitely stands out. He has not been identified as gifted, but they let him go to 2nd grade for math, and he also goes to a weekly session with the gifted teacher (with 6 2nd graders). His teacher is wonderful to work with, and is always working to challenge him, giving him different spelling words etc. We are VERY happy so far, in our "red" State.
