Could someone please help me? First, I want to let you know that I am new to any forum so I do not know any of the abbreviations (don't even know if they are called that) etc. so please bear with me. Thank goodness I came upon this website. I will not go into details as what I have endured over the last year with my son at school but I'm sure every one here understands. As I feel defeated I have been trying to find resources for my child and found this wonderful place. However, I am having a problem. My son, who is now in 4th grade, was tested and entered into our G&T program in 2nd grade. He was the only one in the program and the only one tested. When I recently asked for a copy of his scores the psychologist told me that she would send them to me but she did not have a breakdown of his scores???? So here are his scores:

VCI 132
PRI 143
WMI 146
FSIQ 141

What can I do without these other scores and is this strange or what? One other family had to fight to get her child in, eventually going outside the school and they didn't even accept that. They eventually allowed her son to take the COGAT which is now being used as part of our "new" Academically Talented Program intertwined with our Schoolwide Enrichment Program - you get what I mean!!!! We fought for a year and we lost. Your input would really help. Thanks so much.

Ask for a copy of the full report. I would ask for the GIA scores included in the report. See if your state ed website has any mandates on testing and releasing the results. See how gifted friendly is your state?

This is very far from my expertise but my son just did this test and each one of the categories were broken into subtests

My DS has had 2 really hard years, learning very little and my advocacy has been hard. There is lots of help here. I would suggest, if you have not already done this, look at the Davidson Guide book for book recommendations.

One more thought, some states have a free online school on the computer. they supply a computer and a online teacher.

You should be able to get a copy of the complete scores. I believe that if it's part of the school records, it's your right to the info.

I don't mean to go way off-track, but I do want to add something to what onthegomom said about the free online public schools.

From what I've heard/read, they're often pretty restrictive about things like grade-skipping, subject acceleration, and time online. Some people with GT kids have had a really hard time with it. It's free (paid for by taxes), but it's not usually a carefree homeschooling existence, especially for HG+ kids.

If you pay for a program (like K12, for example), you tend to be granted significantly more freedom to move through the curriculum as you want/need to, if you're thinking of going that route.

Thank you for all your replies. I'm sorry as I did leave out the PSI score which was 103 which was his lowest score. To make a long story short, last year the administration asked for parents to be on a G&T committee. So obviously I was very happy to be a part of it. Boy, I had no idea what I was getting into. We were used as pawns to roll out their new plan to make it more "inclusive" because in most of NJ (and if you read their definition of Gifted) every child is "Gifted" (and something that we heard over and over again from the administration). Myself and another lady, who represented the Parent Committee, presented our recommendations to the BOE and they twisted the information and used it for their own use to create the program that will now be implemented in the next few months. We researched and became the best advocates we could for our children. So when I was told that they did not have a full report for me I was shocked. How could that be? And when I spoke to the psychologist she clearly remembered my son from 2 years ago and was still impressed with his testing. So I know that there should be a breakdown of scores. I don't know if I should maybe have him tested again but outside. I guess we all have the fear that maybe they won't do as well. However, he is still so bright and as all of our fears it seems that it is just such a waste. I wish I had the time and money to do outside things with him but he is 9 and he is the oldest of 5 children. So do you think I should get him tested outside? We really don't have the money but I don't know what else to do. Thank you so much. Also, the scores that they use for the GAI (which they do not use in our school) are areas that I know my son would score well in as these are his strong points. Sorry I got off track but I have done so much research and have been on so many of the Gifted websites in the last year that I think I have become obsessed - well in a good way to help my child . Sorry to add one more thing but the new program is now using the MAPS and COGAT test which I will receive today at conferences so we will see what happens. Thanks again.
